Miter saw fence auto-sets precise cut length

The Internet of Things, giving rise to anything under the sun that is smart, is continuously expanding not just in electronics, but also in hardware and DIY. Now, there’s “The Internet of Tools”, as tool maker Velocity Robotics calls it. Among the various innovative construction equipment emerging is the company’s Autoset, a “connected” miter saw fence that gets DIYers the precise cut.

Autoset does not work alone, though. When operating it, users need the help of a Bluetooth measuring tool, such as a smart tape measure, one of the first smart DIY tools that entered the market. For this model, compatible products are the eTape16 Bluetooth tape measure from eMeasure Inc. and the Disto laser distance meter from Leica Geosystems.

The Bluetooth measuring tool can gauge or accept user-inputted dimensions and send them to Autoset’s iOS or Android app. The smart fence receives the latest measurement from the app and directs the user to what direction he or she must slide the fence marker. After the marker is placed, the smart miter fence adjusts it automatically 1/64in or 0.4mm close to the target point.

With Autoset, it is said that besides achieving precise cuts, DIYers could finish projects faster with fewer material wastage. The user also does not need to check the app from time to time, meaning less movement in work areas.

The smart miter saw fence is currently being crowdfunded via Kickstarter. It starts at $349 for the tester kit. Shipping begins on June 2017.
