The success of the hybrid toy/game or toys-to-life category, propelled by the billion dollar earnings of Activision's Skylanders, Nintendo's Amiibos, and Disney Infinity, could extend into the market for mobile game hybrids.

Mobile game hybrids involve playing digital games with physical toys and game components. Ed Zhao, business analyst at EEDAR, told Fortune he expects more of these crossover gaming products to be launched in the next several years.

"Toys are going high tech, and they command premium prices, so I expect more of these types of crossover gaming products to be launched in 2015 and beyond," Zhao says. "Everybody likes to buy their kids toys and it's not yet clear just how much of an upside in the mobile space specifically existsbut it could eventually be a market worth billions of dollars worldwide."

One of the latest mobile game hybrids is Backyard Sports, a collaboration between startup entertainment company Day 6 Sports Group and mobile technology firm Fingerprint.

Backyard Sports, which originally came out in 1997 as a console game franchise, has been relaunched as a free mobile game for smartphones and tablets featuring NBA and MLB stars as children playing on a backyard basketball court or baseball diamond. Day 6 offers real basketball hoops, basketballs and baseball bats to be used with Backyard Sports to encourage children to get off the couch and engage in physical activity.
