High-performance types in the sintered and bonded NdFeB magnet subcategories will be emphasized to push the line past the entry and midlevels.

China may be the largest production base for NdFeB magnets, but compared with Japan and the US, most of its output consists of low-end and midrange units. To correct the imbalance and gain more leverage from this manufacturing advantage, local makers will pursue the development of variants with greater energy product and coercivity.
In the sintered segment, many suppliers have presented high-performance kinds such as those in the N54 grade. Suzhou Yangjie has released N54 units with 438kJ per cubic meter maximum energy product, 836kA/m coercive force and 876kA/m intrinsic coercive force. Shenzhen Gaiming HiTech Magnetic Products Co. Ltd offers a nickel-plated model in N38 to N54 grades.
The bonded subcategory will see more anisotropic kinds, which deliver better performance than conventional and widely turned out isotropic types. Ningbo Yunsheng is among those that have developed models with energy product of up to 15.3MGOe or more than double the figure achieved in isotropic units.
Production of NdFeB magnets in China will keep increasing in the next two years. Most companies attribute this to healthy demand from the automotive, wind turbine and robotics industries.
Suppliers such as Ningbo Co-Star Material Hi-Tech Co. Ltd have been boosting output annually. The maker, which invested $140,000 in automatic test equipment to improve manufacturing efficiency, plans to maintain its rate of expansion at about 10 percent. It forecasts a similar uptick in export shipments in 2019. The company sends 40 percent of turnout to Europe, the US and Southeast Asia.
China companies allocate between 30 and 80 percent of production for overseas markets. The main destinations are the US, Europe and Asia. In 2019, shipments abroad are anticipated to rise by 5 to 10 percent despite the US-China trade crisis.
About 200 manufacturers offer NdFeB magnets in China. The major ones include Chengdu Galaxy, Zhong Ke San Huan, Ningbo Yunsheng and Yantai Zhenghai. The first is a key player globally.
The large production bases are in the cities of Ningbo in Zhejiang province, Chengdu in Sichuan, Taiyuan in Shanxi, Yantai in Shandong, and in Tianjin and Beijing.
Sintered, bonded, hot-pressed
Sintered types constitute the bulk of NdFeB magnets turned out by China makers. These come in grades of N35 to N54, 35M to 50M, 30H to 48H, 30SH to 45SH, 28UH to 35UH and 28EH to 335EH. Products in the bonded segment include those in BNP-6 to BNP-12L. There are also hot-pressed kinds.
Releases are coated with zinc, gold, silver or epoxy. Suppliers such as Neopro Technology Materials Co. Ltd also use nickel, copper and parylene. The typical shapes are round, ring, rectangular and bar. These can be customized according to requirement.
China manufacturers obtain all materials, including neodymium, iron, boron powder, aluminum, cobalt, praseodymium and dysprosium, from the local supply unless buyers specify other sources.
The cost of inputs went down in 2018, resulting in a 5 to 10 percent reduction in NdFeB magnet prices. In the months ahead, outlay for materials and product quotes may stabilize or decrease but this will be at less than 5 percent.
