This cigar box from Hitaishi KK comes with a genuine leather cover.
Makers adopt nontraditional colors and minimal detailing to spark buyer interest.
India suppliers of cigarette cases and cigar boxes are creating simple yet visually appealing designs to spur demand amid increasing health-consciousness in key markets. This endeavor also aims to cut labor-related expenses brought about by intricate handcrafted releases.
Many makers are focusing on color variety to improve aesthetics. Apart from the conventional brown, black, teak and mahogany, companies are launching pieces in red, blue, green, deep orange and yellow.
Models are often powder-coated or metal-plated. Some have glossy melamine and matte surface treatment that impart a marblelike appearance. Vintage cases with a distressed look are also available. Most products are plain and smooth.
Manufacturers are still releasing cigarette cases with sophisticated detailing such as handcarving, inlays, foil-stamping and embossing but these are limited to the upscale segment. These designs come with brass hinges and locks, magnetic closures, hygrometers and humidors.
To boost differentiation, suppliers are employing an assortment of materials. Leather, wood and metal are the popular options as they allow for a variety of hues, and are durable and locally accessible. Leather is sourced from Kanpur, Chennai and Kolkota while the majority of metal providers are situated in Moradabad, Delhi and Mumbai. Wood is aplenty throughout India. A few makers adopt bamboo and soft marble as well.
Hitaishi KK Mfg Pvt Ltd utilizes cedar, walnut, rose and rubberwood for many of its models. Products are often melamine-finished, and come in black, teak, mahogany and brown.
Wooden Gift Co.'s selection includes square, oval and rectangular cases made of MDF or aromatic wood with lacquer, glossy melamine, PU-coated or marble-grained treatment. Designs have plain and smooth surfaces in blue and green. The Kolkota-based maker also offers cigar boxes that resemble a tree trunk with contrast-color wooden strips. Velvet lining and humidors can be incorporated on request.
H&A Enterprises, meanwhile, makes metal pieces that are distressed, powder-coated, or brass-, nickel- or silver-plated. High-end releases from the company feature manually embossed details.
Prices for cigarette cases and cigar boxes from India are determined mainly by the material, design complexity and storage capacity.
Low-end cigarette cases adopt stainless steel, mango wood, PU leather and brass sheets. Most are plain with a lacquer or powder-coated finish. Products can fit up to 10 cigarettes and priced at $2.50 to $6.
Midrange releases utilize brass, stainless steel, maple, rubberwood, soft marble and wood-leather or -metal combinations. The majority are plain designs with matte, glossy or distressed appearance. Metal models may also be nickel-plated. Products can have inlays, or carved or embossed details. They can store between 10 and 20 cigarettes. Quotes are $6.50 to $15.
Going for $15.50 to $30, high-end cases are made of brass, stainless steel, calfskin, walnut, or a mixture of wood or metal and leather. Patterns may be manually carved, embossed or foil-stamped. Some boast heavy stone inlays and horn trimmings. Releases can hold 20 cigarettes.
For cigar boxes, low-end pieces start at $10 and top $15. Products use MDF, rubberwood, or camel- or calfskin with a shiny matte, lacquer or polished finish. Most are unlined and can hold five to 10 cigars.
Midrange models adopt cedar, rosewood or wood-leather combination and have a capacity of 10 to 40 cigars. These may have a PU film or glass window, velvet lining and humidor. Quotes are $16 to $35.
Upscale versions are made of cedar, maple or rosewood with glossy finish and velvet lining. Hygrometers and humidors are common inclusions. A number of pieces feature leather tops. Cases can store 40 to 100 cigars and list at $36 to $100.
India has an estimated 250 to 300 manufacturers of cigarette cases and cigar boxes but only about 50 of these ship products overseas. Half of exporters are small enterprises with a monthly output of 500 pieces. Midsize makers number 10 to 15 and yield 500 to 1,000 cases every 30 days. The rest are large companies that produce 500 to 2,000 pieces each month, generating more than $1 million in annual revenue.
North and Central America, and Europe are the main export destinations. Suppliers are also keen on boosting shipments to South America, Africa and Australia in the next few months.
