Honeywell is a global leader in environmental protection and energy conservation. Nearly half of its product portfolio is related to energy conservation, and its energy contract management services account for 38% of the global market share. At the same time, Honeywell is also actively applying the latest achievements in energy-saving technology in its own industrial parks in China. Through the hourly analysis and calculation of the waste heat emission and electricity consumption of the HVAC system, a set of heat recovery system is designed, which is equipped with an absorption chiller to generate ice/hot water. The significant energy-saving effect of the system can reduce the power consumption of the HVAC system by 48% in the entire park, and reduce the emission of greenhouse gases by 1,147 tons per year, with a cost saving of RMB 9 million per decade.
In Honeywell China, many green ideas and green technologies have been born. Shane Tedjarati is perhaps the best person to interpret it for us. This Honeywell global vice president has a somewhat special position. He is also the CEO of China and India, and is fully responsible for the overall business of these two markets. The setting of this position reflects the intention of Honeywell's unique strategy of "East serves the West". China and India are not only important business growth points, but also the strategic platform and innovation hub of Honeywell's globalization. Drives greater business growth in other regions.
The establishment of this strategic intention echoes the Chinese government's policies on energy conservation and environmental improvement. In the 4 trillion yuan economic stimulus package introduced last year, 12% of the funds will be directly used for energy conservation and environmental improvement. China is moving towards a green GDP, and Honeywell is determined to go hand in hand with the Chinese government.
Green Projects: Working with the Government
What model does Honeywell take to work with the Chinese government?
The cooperation between Honeywell and the Chongqing government is a relatively mature example. The model we have established is not as simple as selling products, but all-round. We have joint research and development. For example, we jointly developed a turbocharger for small-displacement vehicles with Chongqing Changan Automobile Company. The government's cooperation in administrative licensing, commercial promotion, etc. is also of great help.
Chongqing was chosen from the western development strategy proposed in China's five-year plan. If it is said that Chongqing is experiencing new constructions rising from the ground, Guangdong is a story about economic transformation, innovation and upgrading. Therefore, the focus of Honeywell's cooperation with the Guangdong government is research and development, which is to increase added value.
We hope to develop two to three districts each year, with in-depth cooperation with the local government. I don't want to eat one bite and become a fat man. We need to do deep work and bring all the advantages of Honeywell to that place, so that in two or three years, we will have more than a dozen regions in the country with such in-depth cooperation. .
I describe Honeywell's relationship with the government this way: We appreciate the government leading us to the pool, but we have to swim on our own. We must be sharp enough to best serve our customers' needs. Not to mention that the times when the government ordered local companies to behave are gone forever. For us, it is not a matter of winning one or two contracts, we want to win long-term cooperation.
What environmental protection features and new technologies does Honeywell's intelligent system for the main Olympic stadium? Nest?
Allow me to tell a personal story. I was there on opening day, sitting in the front row, and I could almost reach out to the girl in red as she stood there singing. The scene was hot and humid, not comfortable, but my heart was full of pride. As I sat there, 45 Honeywell engineers were working behind the scenes in the central control room to secure the site. The world is watching, and we're behind the scenes. The integrated system provided by Honeywell for Nest integrates equipment monitoring, automatic fire alarm, security protection, etc. on a unified platform.
Because the top of the nest is open, the massive structure faces a major energy efficiency challenge. How to do? Yes, you can't close the top, but you can insulate the ring from the outside, making it a big shell that provides great protection.
The idea is very clear, it is not easy to realize it, you know? The total construction area of the nest is 258,000 square meters. And it is arc-shaped. If you put the already formed thermal insulation material on it, no matter how small it is cut, it will still have gaps, and it will not be able to fit completely and cover it completely, which is still a waste of energy. Or you bend the insulation from a flat surface to a curved surface, and there is still a problem, it will break in tiny bits, and it still won't work.
What to do? We sprayed the thermal insulation material, which uses an Innovich environmental protection foaming agent developed by Honeywell, which can expand the thermal insulation foam and meet a number of key performance requirements. Of course, the blowing agent itself is not flammable and does not deplete ozone at all. The problem is solved, the key is to spray it, and it can achieve 100% fit.
Can new technologies like this one developed for large public facilities be applied to civilian and commercial products in the future?
The use of foaming agents to spray foam insulation materials has achieved civil and commercial use. Shandong Linuo Group used our technology. A lot of the energy of traditional solar water heaters is dissipated in the water tank because the insulation of the water tank is not good enough. The surface of the water tank is also curved, the prefabricated materials cannot fit perfectly, and most prefabricated insulation materials will deplete ozone. Using the spray solves the problem in one fell swoop without depleting ozone.
Green Technology: Born in the East
At Honeywell, does green technology come from improving existing solutions, or does research and development start from green ideas that need to be solved in terms of environmental protection issues?
Both. Honeywell's technology covers a wide range of fields, so on the one hand, we continuously improve existing products and technologies; on the other hand, we develop green technologies from a new starting point.
The improvements to existing technology are endless. For example, solar panels, the highest efficiency that can be achieved by converting the energy of the sun into energy is only 17%, and the usual one is only about 10%. You can save billions of dollars if you can increase conversion efficiency by one percentage point from 17%. Honeywell's R&D center in Shanghai has a team that specializes in improving the efficiency of solar energy conversion through chemical reactions or any feasible means. Their recent progress is expected to increase by 0.7 percentage points. This 0.7% alone can be used for a company. Solar companies save $200 million.
Another point is to encourage new discoveries and new ideas. I set up a development fund in the company to fund new ideas. Anyone can come up with ideas, even the secretary. I chose to fund energy efficiency, safety equipment, security and water.
How are you doing in China in terms of water conservation?
We know that China's water resources face serious threats, the pollution of rivers, the excessive consumption of water. We might think there are too many Chinese and the shower consumes too much water. In fact, this is not the case. Domestic water consumption in China is much less than in Western countries. The biggest consumption is industrial water, and the contaminant-laden water that comes out of factories is not adequately treated and dumped into rivers.
We found that water is pumped from the river to flow into the factory, and if it is used for heating, then after use the water contains unwanted contaminants and can no longer be used. Of course the contaminants can be filtered out, but the filtration can only be done at room temperature, so either you cool the water, filter out the impurities, and heat it up, which is an expensive process, or as many Chinese factories do , Drain the water containing pollutants directly, and then pump clean water for use from the river, heat the water at room temperature to the required temperature, and then drain it after use. This is very polluting and wasteful.
Our laboratory has developed a special filter that can filter high temperature water. Payback in less than two years with this high temperature ion exchange unit. We went to the factory and told them to pay us the money we saved. We hope that many factories can use it to save water, protect the environment, save electricity, and save money at the same time.
This is an example of a new idea, an innovative solution entirely found in Eastern countries, in China, a technology that was discovered for a specific problem that exists in China. And eventually it can be applied elsewhere, in Western countries.
Such technology is not easy to find in the West. Developed countries have different stages of economic development and face different problems than China.
Yeah, so I've been emphasizing the uniqueness of China, and we've been ignoring it too much. A device like this one capable of filtering hot water could not have been produced in Canada. Canada is the most water-rich country, and at the same time they don't have much manufacturing. So innovation like this can't come from the West, and people don't even think about it.
I would also like to give an example. Once I asked Sheng Huaren (a former vice-chairman of the National People's Congress) what kept you tossing and turning at night, and he replied that the miners who died in the mines made him worry. I went back to the company and asked the engineers to find out the real reason why the miners were so hard to save, and they found several problems and developed technology based on the first few reasons. Finally, an electronic monitoring device was developed. The personnel positioning software can accurately locate the position of each miner in the underground. When the system detects the danger of landslides, explosions, etc., the receiving equipment equipped with each miner will issue a warning.
This is also a solution to China's real problems found in China, and it is also applicable to some mine operations in Africa. This solution is not easy to find from Western countries, such as Australia, whose coal mines are open, not closed like China and Africa.
Green Solutions: Beyond Localization
Looking for Eastern solutions in the East goes beyond technology localization, right?
That's right. Technology localization is concerned with how to reduce costs and adapt a product and technology to the local market. When you do localization, you will find that this product and technology is no longer needed by the market, it is too late. More importantly, many times the West does not have a solution to China's real problems, because the West does not have the same real problems.
So what I'm saying is, forget the Western solutions, start from scratch, study the Chinese problem, and you'll find the perfect Chinese solution, and it's low cost. And once you find a solution to the China problem, you can apply it to India, Africa, and more. I believe that more and more solutions will also have a place in Europe and North America.
At Honeywell, we call it "East at West." This idea was put forward at an office meeting three or four years ago, but it was the result of countless discussions, not a dazzling and trendy idea that popped up for a while, and could be used for public relations. In fact, we have been doing this consciously and unconsciously for years. Finally one day we realized that this was the right thing to do.
I expect that in five to ten years, Honeywell will be a more balanced company, not West serving East and East serving West. But today I'm going to talk about the East serving the West, because we haven't done enough, and I'm going to keep emphasizing it. We have invented so little for the East, we are just localizing our products. The world centered on the West is gradually tilting towards the East. This is a global trend. How can Honeywell be called a multinational company if it does not follow this trend?
Does Honeywell's buildings incorporate its own energy-saving technologies? Will you experiment with new technologies that have not yet been marketed on yourself?
You know there's a saying in English: You're going to eat your own food. We don't want to go to other people's factories to promote energy-saving technologies and hear people ask, "Why don't you use them yourself?"
I often tell our engineers, look for our own buildings A place to save energy. They got great results. Our building has achieved a good thermal cycle, and the waste heat energy generated by the engine is used for heating, ventilation and air conditioning, thereby saving the power consumption of air conditioning. It is estimated that the cost will be saved 9 million yuan every ten years.
If I were to introduce people to the technology and results of thermal cycling, all I had to do was show them around our building and show them our R&D engineers, ourselves being a living example. I have always believed that in order to make others believe, you must believe it yourself, and you have to eat crabs first.
We also experiment on ourselves with technologies that are not widely marketed. It has always been said that the East serves the West, but it does not mean that it is wrong for the West to serve the East, and there is no merit. Did you know that China's energy waste rate is 2.3 times that of the United States and 6 to 7 times that of Japan, which means that China consumes 2.3 times more energy per unit of GDP than the United States. Even in the United States, if the full use of Honeywell's existing technology can save 20% of energy consumption, China is even more impressive, saving 40% to 50%.
Whether the East serves the West or the West serves the East, it is all about finding a business model, solving the source of funds, and finding the right people to do it.
