Porcelain tiles regain popularity

According to a recent article from the Washington Post, the use of porcelain tiles among homeowners is making a big comeback.

Among the recent innovations for porcelain tiles are the available sizes. Manufacturers can now produce tiles that are up to 5 by 11 feet, thin or just about 1/8in thick, and almost impermeable to water. In areas that experience freezing temperatures during winter, this is beneficial, as big tiles would not crack and can be used for indoors.

The said characteristics are present in a new type of porcelain tile that has no official name yet. For now, the National Tile Contractors Association refers to it as ‘thin porcelain panels’ or ‘thin porcelain tile’.

The tiles come in different neutral shades while some resemble closely other materials such as wood and textiles. There are tiles that look like a solid block of marble, like Dekton’s Aura. Another advantage of big tiles is the unobtrusive look of grout lines, if any at all.

Moreover, due to the stain resistance of the said tiles, spills do not need to be cleaned up immediately and would leave no residue even if cleanup is done the next day. Also having crack resistance, no damage is done when heavy home items such as pans are dropped by accident on the flooring.
