Snapdragon 810 not expected to be in the next Samsung flagship.

Qualcomm has been the market leader for Android SoCs for years, but that lead may be significantly diminished by the news that its flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 810, will probably not power the upcoming Galaxy S6 smartphone. While the phone was expected to be launched with a combination of Qualcomm’s SoC and Samsung’s new 14nm Exynos SoC in different markets, it appears as though heat issues have forced Samsung to drop the 810 altogether, with all new Galaxy S6s using Samsung’s in-house solution.

This could be a significant blow to the dominance of Qualcomm at the high end. Despite Samsung’s flagging fortunes in the past year, the company is still the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer, and the S6 is Samsung’s flagship smartphone, expected to outsell all of its other models in 2015. With increasing competition from MediaTek on the high end, and competition from Allwinner, Spreadtrum, and even Intel on the low end, it could have a significant impact on the future of the company.

Nevertheless, Samsung’s Exynos is not a complete SoC solution…yet. For the moment, the Galaxy S6 will likely include baseband components from Qualcomm, specifically the LTE radio. But Samsung is positioning Exynos as its next generation SoC, and later this year it is expected that the company will be able to manufacture a complete chipset with radio and GPU included, and with its already state-of-the-art 14nm manufacturing process, it may not need outside vendors for this part of the smartphone at all in the future.
