Ouya was one of the early success stories on Kickstarter, raising $8.5 million in 2012 in order to build an OTT game console based on Android. Unfortunately for the company, game and hardware developers for the console never really embraced it, resulting in relatively disappointing sales and low profitability for the platform, which at the time of this writing has about 200,000 users. As a result, PC-gaming hardware company Razer has acquired the software and human assets of Ouya in an all-cash deal.

Razer, noted for its gaming mice, keyboards, controllers and laptops, is expected to use the software and development team to enhance its Forge TV Android-based gaming console. It is not known if the software acquisition will allow the company to make its own console compatible with the current Ouya 1000+ game ecosystem.

As it stands, the move is designed to allow for the expansion of Razer's product line. Ouya had been working with electronics company Xiaomi on its Mi Box, and will continue under Razer with the idea to use the game hardware company's greater experience and scale to become a more profitable partner.
