Samsung's new TV doubles as framed art

Sometimes a piece of technology is a work of art. The sophisticated look of Apple's iPhone, for example, has long been considered the gold standard of smartphone design. Technology can go further now, though. It occupies space in people's homes like never before. One company banking on this is Samsung, which hired Swiss designer Yves Béhar to create The Frame, a new TV that doubles as a framed artwork.

The concept for The Frame is similar to Samsung's Serif TV announced last summer. This new TV, however, takes the concept a step further. Without the stand, the device's design should be less polarizing. When it is not being used, the model goes into art mode to display different works of art inside its white frame.

There is little information about the TV available right now, but it does look like it is not meant to replace a large living room TV. As the promotional image suggests, this is ideal for a bedroom or another part of the house where the TV can look like a framed picture when not in use.

To help with its minimal design, The Frame uses a single, slim cord for power and Samsung's "No Gap Wall-mount." This makes the TV reminiscent of Xiaomi's TV, which is thinner than a smartphone, allowing it to easily hang on a wall. That TV uses a separate box for all the smart technology, enabling it to be easily upgraded. Samsung does not appear to have anything like that in mind for The Frame, making the TV more impressive if it manages to cram all its electronics inside its svelte design.
