Smart baby mat fuses physical play, digital storytelling

Teppino's baby playmat comes with digital prints that can be scanned using a mobile app to access educational stories.

Play mats, a staple in any nursery, get a modern twist. In an interview with Spielwarenmesse, David Völker, founder of Teppino, describes how his product differs from other similar digital-enhanced play mats.

Instead of centering on digital play, as is the focus of most toys-to-life products on the market today, the Teppino play mat concentrates more on the physical aspects of play. The digital facet of the mat is just a vehicle that will encourage children to move around the mat and play.

Teppino is essentially a large map, consisting of digitally printed establishments, including a fire station, school and clinic, which can be scanned via an app, which is suitable for Android and iOS devices. Scanning a building will access educational stories that revolve around it, as well as the town's inhabitants.

The mat is made of polyamide and measures 100x150cm. Its anti-slip bottom prevents the product from moving around while the child plays. Teppino retails for approximately 36 euros.
