Featured at the 2016 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas are new smart and innovative toys, most of which are designed to help children learn about various academic fields.
Lego Education introduced a new version of its WeDo robotics kit to pique children's interest in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields.
The WeDo 2.0 is comprised of Lego bricks, a Bluetooth hub paired with a motor, and motion and tilt sensors. The drag-and-drop interface is for writing applications that can connect to the hub and sensors. Teachers using the kit can get training and support for the 40-hour curriculum. The software is compatible with Mac, iOS and Android.
Spin Master showcased the Rex-inspired droid called Meccasaur, which has a security mode function to guard and protect a user's items. The Meccanoid G16 and G16 KS have improved permutations since last year. Enhancements include quicker voice recognition, wider memory and more powerful programming capabilities.
Micronoids are suitable for children who are starting out in programming. They can be programmed to navigate obstacle courses, sing and dance.
Another educational toy featured at the show was the Hackaball, which had a successful fundraising on Kickstarter last year. Children can program the toy, learning the basics of coding while getting physically active at the same time. The rubber ball can connect to an iOS app and users can customize the sensors and lights to create their own games. Pre-designed games are included.
