After debuting its educational robot kit in Japan last year, Sony is bringing its Koov robotics kit international with a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo. Sony is following the trend of using robot kits to teach kids the concepts of coding. Other companies such as Wonder Workshop have introduced their own coding robotics products. Sony will not be the last company to jump into this market. Who does not love robots and education?
Children will primarily be learning to code through a mobile app, which has 23 “ready-to-build Robot Recipes.” Then children can get to work using blocks to make their own robots. The advanced kit, which costs $399, also comes with 23 sensors and actuators. There are also $159 basic and $287 starter kits with fewer recipes, blocks and sensors.
It is not clear that Sony knows any better than other companies how to crack the code for the children’s robotics market. With all the money pouring in, though, it seems clear that parents are happy to keep spending on educational toys until someone creates the perfect one.
