Sony’s mobile division has partnered with Tokyo-based robotics and autonomous software startup ZMP to get into the drone business. Sony isn’t going to produce drones itself – at least not any time soon – but it is going to try to be a solution provider for existing and new drone manufacturers. The joint venture between the companies will be called Aerosense.
The idea is to create an ecosystem of hardware and software that will make it easier for both manufacturers and end-users to tailor drones to their needs. Sony will provide hardware including camera lenses and imaging sensors while ZMP will provide its automated driving and robotics technology.
The main driver for Sony appears to be the expansion of its imaging hardware into more areas. The image sensors it produces are found in a wide variety of smartphones, including the newest Apple iPhones and Samsung Galaxies, and have been one of the few bright spots financially for the electronics giant’s mobile division.
