Sourcing Center: Mainland China's largest PCB base gets bigger in Greater Bay Area

Pursuing technology and innovation, mainland China melds production hub Guangdong province with financial center Hong Kong and tourism haven Macau.

The Greater Bay Area, which encompasses Guangdong province, Hong Kong and Macau, is one of the major electronics production bases in mainland China. It leads in consumer and automotive electronics, computers, communications equipment, medical devices and industrial machinery, thanks to a comprehensive industry chain and convenient transportation system. As a matter of course, the region is also the mainland's PCB hub, gathering local and foreign makers in close proximity to their market.

A total of 141 PCB suppliers are in Guangdong, of which 82 are locally owned and the rest with foreign investment.

Each realizes a minimum production value of $14.5 million annually. In 2018, the companies had a combined total of $25.4 billion, rising nearly 7 percent over the previous year's level, according to Sohu.com. The rate of increase is estimated to have been between 5 and 10 percent in 2019 and will stay in this range in 2020.

Domestic enterprises run small and midsize operations, and turn out mainly entry-level and midrange products, while others consisting mostly of suppliers from Hong Kong and Taiwan caters to the midrange and high-end market segments.

Guangdong's top 10 PCB makers are Avary Holding, TTM Technologies, Shennan Circuit, Zhuhai Mektec, Shenzhen Kingwong, TPT PCB, Compeq (Huizhou), Suntak, Fastprint and Ellington PCB. Six of them are foreign-invested.

Hub in a hub

Mainland China is the biggest production base for PCBs, accounting for more than half of shipments worldwide. Of the hub's aggregate volume, almost 60 percent comes from the Greater Bay Area, specifically from key cities such as Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Dongguan and Huizhou.

There are a number of industrial zones dedicated to PCB manufacture that have been set up in these locations.

Zhuhai has built the Fushan Industrial Park and the Gaolangang Economic Development Zone, covering 4sqkm and 1sqkm respectively. The undertaking's goal is to achieve a production value of $7.7 billion in 2025 and $14.5 billion in 2030.

Enhanced products, services

A wide variety of PCBs for consumer electronics, communications, computers and peripherals, and automotive, medical and industrial applications can be sourced from local suppliers in the Greater Bay Area.

There are single-, double-sided, multilayer and HDI types. In terms of the substrate used, the options are rigid, flexible and rigid-flex variants. Base materials include CEM1, CEM3, Rogers, FR-4, high-Tg FR-4, Teflon and aluminum. Backplanes are also part of the selection.

Companies have production capability for up to 60 layers, 3mil minimum line width and spacing, 0.2mm minimum hole size, ±0.075mm tolerance in PTH and ±0.05mm in NPTH, and 1 to 6oz outer and 1/2 to 5oz inner layer copper. They offer ENIG, flash gold, HASL, lead-free HASL, OSP, and immersion gold, tin and silver surface finishes, and green, black, white, red and custom solder mask.

The maximum board size that can be turned out is 500x1,200mm with ±2mm tolerance, while board thickness can be between 0.4 and 2mm with ±10 percent tolerance.

Makers ensure products comply with relevant industry standards such as CE, RoHS and UL. They use materials from local and foreign providers, depending on the requirement.

To be able to handle any specification and volume, suppliers continuously upgrade their facilities by introducing advanced production and test equipment. Zitrok Electronics Co. Ltd plans to do so to sustain its output expansion.

There are also manufacturers that are working to realize smart factories. Zhuhai Founder has invested $145 million for such a project to boost production efficiency in its new facility. The company targets a monthly output of 92,903.04sqm of eight to 18-layer high-end PCBs for communications equipment, servers, data storage, and industrial control and medical applications.

By 2020, the Greater Bay Area will have five key industrial bases, which are electronic information, automotive, smart home appliances, robotics and green petrochemicals. These sectors will have respective market scales of $0.72trillion, $0.26 trillion, $0.18 trillion, $0.14 trillion and $0.02 trillion.
