But what are the factors to consider in sourcing quality genuine leather handbags? Here's a lowdown.

Material: Full-grain leather is the best material option. Because this type of genuine leather has not been sanded, buffed or snuffed, the grain is retained, imparting strength, durability and breathability. The last helps reduce moisture build-up. Over time, full-grain leather develops a patina, the soft sheen that gives leather character.

Top-grain leather, meanwhile, has the split layer separated, making it thinner and more pliable than full-grain variants. But because its surface has been sanded and finished, the material has a colder plastic-like feel. It also does not develop a natural patina.
