Supercapacitors’ potential as a replacement energy storage technology has yet to be realized, but these components have already found use in tandem with batteries in various applications. Compared to batteries, they have a higher power density but can store only so much energy. As such, these ultracapacitors work best where a quick burst of power is required. They are used in acceleration and regenerative braking in electric vehicles and to generate high torque in power tools. Their applications extend to the industrial, network communications, medical and military fields as well as smart meters, UPS and solid-state drives.
Further research in this category has yielded hybrid supercapacitors or lithium-ion capacitors (LICs), which use the energy storage mechanisms of a Li-ion battery and an electrical double-layer capacitor or a best-of-both-worlds solution.
In China, manufacturers of supercapacitors have been undertaking R&D focused on achieving high energy density. The hybrid type has attracted their attention as well. Shenzhen Jiamingxing, for instance, has released LICs with 1,300F capacitance, 3.8V rated voltage and more than 500,000-cycle life span. Many product releases are forthcoming in the years ahead.
Supercapacitors from Chinese suppliers use domestically sourced or imported active carbon, metallic oxides, separators, electrolytes and electrodes. The major homegrown suppliers of these materials include Ruitai New Materials, Yuanli Active Carbon and Torch Electron.
