An Austria-based startup is showing that merino wool is not just for sweaters, it can be used to make sneakers as well.

Geisswein, a company based in the Austrian Alps, launched recently a Kickstarter campaign for a pair of running shoes made of an in-house developed 100 percent wool material called Merino Wool 3D Stretch. The team says that wool contains small air chambers that regulate the footwear's temperature, allowing it to cool the feet during the hot summer months and keep them warm in the cold winter season.

And because wool boasts inherent moisture-absorbent and deodorizing properties, the sneakers can be worn barefoot without users worrying about sweaty or smelly feet.

Additionally, the company claims that it procures wool strictly from suppliers employing cruelty-free means.

The Geisswein Merino Runner also has a changeable footbed made of organic Eco Ortholite formula, which is said to contain natural castor bean oil. This ingredient promises to make the footbed soft and comfortable, and is 100 percent biodegradable.

As for the soles, the shoes use lightweight EVA.

Geisswein has already surpassed its initial goal of 50,000 euros with a few days left in its crowdfunding campaign
