Researchers from Seoul National University and Harvard have developed a robot that can jump on water, just like a water strider insect.

Robotics scientists and engineers have long looked to nature for clues on how to design better robots. Most of the time, this has meant looking at large animals, just like MIT researchers modeling a robot on a Cheetah to jump over obstacles. Now, a team of researchers from Seoul National University and Harvard have created robots that mimic the ability of water strider insects to move on and jump on water.

After studying the mechanics of the water strider, the team was able to replicate the insect’s ability to move and jump on the water. One of the interesting aspects of the design is that the robot was made using folded composites that self-assemble. This means that it may be easy for them to be made in large batches.

Applications for the robot include search and rescue in watery areas, especially if small sensors and wireless communication packages can be attached. As it stands, the process used to manufacture the microbots is intended to use a variety of electromechanical devices on a very small scale – from micrometers to centimeters.
