DRAM enhancements for mobile and ever-smaller chip feature sizes drive growth.

According to trade association SEMI, average orders for semiconductor equipment increased 10 percent year-over-year in June. SEMI has forecasted a 20.8 percent growth in revenue for semiconductor equipment suppliers, from US$31.8 billion in 2013 to US$38.4 billion in 2014.

“Semiconductor equipment bookings are at the highest level since May 2012,” said Denny McGuirk, president and CEO of SEMI.

Two of the key driving forces behind the growth in capital equipment spending by chipmakers are DRAM technology upgrades for mobile devices and investments in sub-20nm technology.
