USB technology has become the unifying standard in mobile electronic devices and has since been enabling on-the-go connectivity through iterations offering higher speed and later, power delivery. Its physical form has also changed over the years, with USB-C becoming dominant for its slimmer and reversible features as well as high wattage power and faster data transmission capabilities.

The latest USB4 specification is expected to gain wide adoption in the coming years across electronics applications such as computers and peripherals, mobile, wearable, automotive, medical and other communication devices.

In the mobile category, the standard’s reach remains limited to the high-end market for tablets, laptops and gaming docks, while there are no known smartphone brands with native ports at present.

USB4’s features, notably up to 40Gbps bandwidth as well as compatibility with Thunderbolt 4, DisplayPort 2.0, PCIe and USB 3.X, make this iteration a widely perceived future trend for mobile devices.

And once the USB4 standard becomes established, the updated USB4 2.0 version is soon to follow, with its promised speeds of up to 80Gbps bidirectional and 120Gbps in one direction.

In the electronics industry’s upstream segment, USB 3.2 Gen 2 and Gen 2x2 Type-C connectors and cable assemblies are the standard solutions for mobile devices. These support theoretical bandwidths of 10 and 20Gbps, respectively.

Assured growth

The USB interconnects sector will continue to benefit from the growing mobile electronics market. The smartphone segment alone was already at $550.78 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $897.32 billion in 2032, according to Market Monitor. The same trend is forecast for tablet PCs, wearables and AR/VR devices, ensuring a further increase in demand for USB connectors and cable assemblies.

But based on QY Research’s data, USB-C connectors will have a particularly secure future, with their total market value of $3.442 billion in 2024 going up to $15.91 billion in 2031 at a CAGR of 24.8 percent from 2025.

One key driver of this growth is the EU’s Common Charger Directive, which mandates that all new devices sold in its member countries have a USB-C charging port. This has started to apply to mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headsets, videogame consoles, portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems and earbuds from December 28, 2024. For laptops, the effective date is April 28, 2026.

Globally, the top five suppliers of USB-C connectors are Foxconn Interconnect, Luxshare, TE Connectivity, JAE and Foxlink, with a combined market share of more than 65 percent in 2025 based on QY Research’s estimates.

USB interconnects hub

China, with its vast electronics manufacturing ecosystem, is the largest source of USB connectors and cable assemblies. It accounts for more than 60 percent of shipments worldwide, according to QY Research.

Its supplier pool is in the hundreds, with homegrown enterprises operating on small to medium scale making up over two-thirds. Other companies have investment from the Taiwan region, Hong Kong SAR and Japan.

Many factories are found in Shenzhen, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Suzhou, Changzhou, Ningbo and Qingdao. Foxconn Interconnect has several subsidiaries in Jiangsu, Guangdong, Henan and Shandong.

Most domestically owned manufacturers export 30 to 80 percent of their products, mainly to Europe, the US and the Asia-Pacific region. However, with the higher tariff imposed by the US, they are expanding reach to other markets, including the Middle East and Latin America.

China-made USB interconnects

For mobile electronics applications, Chinese suppliers offer mostly USB 3.2 connectors and cable assemblies.

The typical specifications are a rating of 20V, 5A, maximum contact resistance of 50mohms, minimum insulation resistance of 100Mohms and operating temperature of -25 to 85 C. These products are made in compliance with UL, CE and RoHS standards.

Male and female connectors have copper or zinc alloy contacts with gold or nickel plating, PBT or LCP insulators and nickel- or tin-lead-plated shells. Cables with Type-C-to-Type-C or Type-A plugs and nylon-braided or PVC jackets come in standard lengths of 1, 2, 3, 5 and 10 meters. Customization requests remain widely accepted.

Anticipating market adoption of the USB4 specification, there are companies that have started offering compliant products. Interviewed supplier Dongguan Hundu Electronic Co. Ltd has introduced USB4 cable assemblies for mobile phones, laptops, tablets and external hard drives. These UL-listed cables support 40Gbps transmission, 240W fast charging at 48V, 5A and 8K resolution at 60Hz. They are available in variants measuring 0.5, 1, 1.2, 1.4 meters, although other lengths can be made.

All metal and plastic materials, including copper, gold, nickel and PVC, come from domestic providers. Some manufacturers specialize in cable assemblies and use outsourced connectors.

Most Chinese USB interconnects companies will keep their prices steady despite fluctuating copper costs to remain competitive.
