The market for AMOLED display modules will continue to expand, driven by rising use in consumer, mobile, wearable and automotive electronics for their advantages over other technologies. Flexible types, in particular, will do well in the coming years as adoption in wearables, such as smart watches and fitness trackers, and VR/AR devices gathers steam.
Based on a report on Huaon, a Chinese website, the global shipment of rigid AMOLED displays reached 307 million units and flexible types 275 million in 2020. By 2025, the flexible category will lead with 601 million units while rigid displays come up short with 440 million.
This developing trend for flexible displays has been fueling R&D efforts in China’s AMOLED display manufacturing sector in recent years, led by BOE. In July 2023, the company announced that its year-end shipments of flexible AMOLED displays would approach 80 million units, or an increase of more than 30 percent year on year. This will go up further as BOE targets to exceed 120 million units annually in a bid to dominate this category in the future, according to an article on GizmoChina.
Current mainstream AMOLED display modules from Chinese companies come in sizes ranging from 0.39 to 10.1in, with 1.4 to 5.5in units forming the bulk of shipments. They are available in square and round versions for use in mobile and consumer electronics, wearables, automotive displays, and medical and gaming devices. Most meet CE, RoHS and UL requirements.
Chinese manufacturers source organic materials from suppliers in the US, Germany, Japan and South Korea, mainly UDC, DuPont, Merck, Idemitsu Kosan and LG Chem. Some also turn to domestic providers such as Jilin OLED, LTOM and Valiant. Other production inputs are obtained domestically.
There were no major changes in the cost of materials and components in the past 12 months, but prices of AMOLED display modules slightly went down due to competition. They are expected to stabilize in the coming months.
