The term “MagSafe” is something that both consumers and buyers have already heard before. That’s because MagSafe technology used to be incorporated in the older Macbooks from 2006 to 2016. Magnetic pins were used to connect the charging cable and the Mac. This feature was useful in preventing accidents. If the user knocked or trip over the cable, the cord would just disconnect, thus protecting the Mac from falling over. But in 2016, Apple phased out this technology in favor of the more standard USB-C cable. During Apple’s October 2020 keynote event, the California-based tech giant re-introduced its MagSafe technology, now in the iPhone 12 series and upcoming iPhones in the future. This technology will have a huge impact on the tech market and will pave way to various mobile accessories that buyers can easily source here at Global Sources.

What is the new MagSafe in the iPhone 12 series?

Apple’s latest MagSafe, which is currently unique in the mobile industry, is now a wireless charging and mounting system technology.

Apple’s wound-wire coil design incorporates an array of magnets under the back cover of the iPhone 12 and includes an NFC sensor and magnetometer. The magnets are optimized for alignment and efficiency. They properly position and center the iPhone to ensure the fastest charge as possible up to 15W, compared to the standard 7.5W via Qi charging. A common issue in today’s Qi-enabled chargers is that if the phone is not in center or is even off-center just a bit, the charging speed will be even slower. With MagSafe charging, Apple aims to make this problem a thing of the past. And the best part is that any Qi-enabled mobile phone is also compatible with Apple’s MagSafe wireless charger.

MagSafe-enabled mobile accessories:

Aside from wireless charging, MagSafe is now an avenue for new accessories. Its magnets can recognize MagSafe-enabled wallets or card holders, cases, leather sleeves and more, which can simply be snapped into the back of the iPhone. Apple has its official MagSafe charger and duo folding charger, which can also power the Apple watch. Third-party manufacturer Belkin will also be releasing a wireless charging car mount and a multi-charger dock.
