Should management education be international or local? Although major business schools have their own strategies and corresponding actions, there seems to be a bit of wishful thinking. What kind of managers does a company need? What kind of business school do you like? Let's ask the same question to HR managers in different companies and hear what these recipients of management education have to say.
International vision + localized execution
Li Hanzhang (General Manager of Oracle Greater China): Our management needs to be localized as well as international. The customers we face hope that we can give him localized solutions and introduce foreign experience to them. Because for many local customers, they are very different from 5 years ago, and they hope to be in line with foreign countries. For example, the Bank of China hopes to know how foreign banks do it, and if we have any experience to share with them, to help them avoid detours. We need our employees to be aware of the needs of local customers, and to be aware of what's going on abroad and to be their advisors, so that customers can feel our value.
Glocalization should be talked about in China. No company can only talk about internationalization, nor can it only talk about localization. Glocalization is an idea that cannot be changed. Internationalization focuses more on standardization and our core values, while localization is more on the operational level, such as how to operate and execute in China.
Lin Deen (President and CEO of Degussa China): Our goal is to be "glocal". It is neither a complete localization nor a pure internationalization, but it means that we must have a global strategic vision, but also proceed from the local situation to implement the globalization strategy. Now more and more Chinese employees and leaders have appeared in Germany, and many talents from Germany have entered China. These people need to have a better understanding of the local market and environment.
Duan Dong (Sina Human Resources Director): We pay more attention to the quality of localization, because the company's products are localized. Some management support departments need talents with a deep international background, because now that the company is listed overseas, it is impossible to cope with the international operating rules only by understanding the domestic situation. For example, the audit department needs to recruit managers who understand the principles of American auditing.
In general, because the company is in the Internet industry, we need our managers to be both industry experts and managers. As for what qualities are needed, it depends on whether the person's passion, ability to express, personality, and behavior can affect others, and only if they have appeal can they manage well; in addition, they must know how to manage risks and know where the risks are; third, they must Plan, plan driving force is stronger. These are all important qualities as a team manager.
Business School Reputation + Student Experience
Liu Jian (Human Resources Director of Oracle Northern Region): We do not exclude direct introduction of students from management schools. There is no emphasis or restriction, it mainly depends on his personal work experience and ability, as well as the comprehensive quality reflected in the interview process. For example, his reputation in the previous work unit, whether he has teamwork spirit, whether he meets the six core values of our company, these are all factors we have to consider.
Getting hired is more up to the individual. As for domestic management schools, major companies will definitely consider the school's reputation when recruiting. This reputation includes the quality of its courses, the atmosphere of the classes, the way of teaching, etc. I think institutions like CEIBS are closer to the foreign teaching system, providing a good environment for students and encouraging students to open up their horizons.
Lin Deen: In terms of cultivating management talents, Degussa has negotiated cooperation intentions with China Europe International Business School, the top management school in China, and has formulated a plan to sponsor EMBA. It will be officially implemented soon.
In addition, I also have a piece of advice for young management talents. Young people should aim high, that is to say, try to choose the best management school to study when conditions permit. In addition to the China Europe International Business School I mentioned, there are Insead in Europe and Wharton in the United States. I think they are all very good schools. I personally think that Wharton is probably the best business school in the United States. The teachers in that school are very personal, and studying there is not only a matter of curriculum, but also enables these future leaders to reshape their personalities, learn The ability to think outside the box.
Duan Dong: More than 70% of our leadership is cultivated internally. Recruiting management from outside is generally a talent who has read an MBA and has work experience before and after reading. It is rare to directly recruit MBAs from the school as management.
We pay more attention to graduates with overseas management education when recruiting. Localized graduates often have good professional knowledge, but poor overall quality. Last year, we recruited several professionals who came back from the UK. I feel that they have a wide range of knowledge, and compared with graduates from domestic management schools, they are quick to learn.
Of course it also depends on the individual. Last year, we invited two graduates from management schools to the company for trial, one from the University of Sydney and the other from the University of International Business and Economics. The graduate of the University of Sydney did not think about what to do in the future before studying. During the trial period, we found that his actual level was not high, so he was not hired. The student from the University of International Business and Economics kept collecting cases in this area, communicated with people in the company, communicated with mentors, and made some solutions for the company to see their responses. He does not have much practical experience in enterprises, but we feel that his knowledge is very systematic, he understands what problems are happening in enterprises, and has his own opinions, as if he has three or four years of work experience in enterprises.
What students gain and experience
What is the biggest gain for you from international or localized management education? How helpful has it been to your current job? We put these questions to several MBA students who have already entered the workforce. For trainees who receive overseas education, their gains are mainly concentrated in the amount of knowledge, competitive awareness and broad vision; for local MBA graduates, management education not only gives them new knowledge, but also helps them accumulate more knowledge. Many local alumni resources.
International thinking and vision
Wen Rui (International MBA of National University of Singapore, graduated in 2004, currently senior commissioner of BMW China): Management education cannot be said to be of direct help to work, because after all, the case and the Companies are not the same business. But some ways of thinking can be used. For example, in the process of learning the case, we will ask students to provide several solutions. Each solution must state the reason for the assumption, what kind of results it will bring to the company, where are the benefits, where are the disadvantages, etc., and then the students Form group discussions, brainstorm ideas, and come to a conclusion through argumentation. In practical work, there should be multiple solutions to the same thing, and the MBA program helped me form multiple ways of thinking. This is the most helpful to me.
Jian Ji (MBA of the University of Hong Kong, graduated in 2005, currently the manager of China Mobile Training Service Department): The MBA program of the University of Hong Kong has changed his way of thinking. Most of the classes are based on the cases of international companies, including local Hong Kong companies. For cases, teachers will lead students to discuss local solutions from international cases. In this way, the teacher gave me broad directions and new viewpoints, and the students integrated the new viewpoints through discussion. When it comes to work, many of my ideas come from discussions in class and instructions from teachers.
Xi Yi (MBA from the University of North Carolina, graduated in 2005, currently the client director of Freilink Public Relations Consulting): Through business school I learned what the most advanced operation in the world looks like, although at work It's possible that this thing won't be used, but I at least know where these things are, where they're going, and I'm trying to work in those directions as much as possible.
The business school is the center of information. In the U.S., what's happening in the world is brought together in business schools, and many professors have access to this information while sitting in their offices. He can clearly tell you that these things are state-of-the-art, and that many professors can describe China as "surprised".
Feel the international competitive atmosphere
Wen Rui: The elimination rate of national universities is very high. Every course, no matter how big or small, will be graded and classified by the teacher, and the students will be divided into ABCDEF grades. Every class must have students in the grade. The mandatory requirement must be that there must be a failing grade. This is the case for every course. This requires you to learn better than others. And if the average is not enough, you can't get a degree certificate. The NUS MBA has made me more competitive and able to face pressure.
Xi Yi: Studying in our business school is very tiring, especially likely to fail, and it is very rare for students to pass. There were more than 200 people in the college, and in the end, about a dozen students were dismissed or given up.
While UNC is a strong team school, it is also a very competitive school. This kind of cooperation and competition, and how to build your reputation in the team, is a very comprehensive skill. This is especially true for Chinese students. In the United States, everything starts from scratch. This kind of training for people is something that Chinese business schools will never have.
Local alumni resources
Zeng Kaixuan (Peking University Guanghua MBA, graduated in 2003, currently general manager of Feihe Dairy Group): Guanghua's contacts are very helpful to me. If you have any questions, you can discuss with students or teachers. Well done by everyone, some resources are available. For example, I don’t know much about finance, so I will ask some students who understand finance if I have any questions in operation.
Peng Dingwu (Peking University Guanghua MBA, graduated in 2000, currently managing director of Beijing Julong Digital Technology Co., Ltd.): Some of our company's business is abroad, and there will be some problems in the international market. For example, if we are recruiting in Bangladesh, how about foreign insurance? How to manage global resources? These were not taught in Guanghua's class. When encountering these problems, I often turn over the alumni roster and ask my classmates about this problem. HR managers like Kodak and Nokia are all my alumni, and I will learn from them.
Can get practical management knowledge
Peng Dingwu: When I first graduated, my job was mainly human resources, and I found that some methods taught in the classroom were quite effective. For example, in recruitment, teachers in the classroom will organize students to imitate the recruitment process on the spot, tell you what the applicant does by knocking on the door and the actions after entering the door. They will also teach me how to ask questions from interviewers, how to analyze personality test papers, and how to Barriers these details to the interviewer. At that time my teacher was Taiwanese, and he would show us what Taiwan does.
Xi Yi: Foreign courses attach great importance to application. For example, in foreign statistics courses, teachers have to talk about some cases and send some reading materials for us to read and discuss with the cases. These teachers are very clear about how to do it in reality, and he will tell us about the operation cases in reality.
