Wheeled excavators offer a unique blend of mobility and versatility, making them ideal for various applications. They can travel quickly and efficiently on paved roads, eliminating the need for specialized transport. This makes them particularly well-suited for projects requiring frequent relocation between job sites.

There are mini, midi and large units. Mini excavators typically weigh between 1.5 and 3.5 tons and offer excellent maneuverability in tight spaces. They are ideal for landscaping, small construction projects and utility work. Midi versions, meanwhile, range from 4 to 8 tons and offer a balance of size and power, making them versatile for various applications, including urban construction, site preparation and demolition work. Large wheeled excavators usually weigh over 10 tons and are designed for heavy-duty applications like large-scale construction, mining and material handling.

Based on configuration, the types are standard, zero-tail swing and offset. Standard wheeled excavators feature a conventional design with a single boom and arm, offering versatility for various digging and lifting tasks. Zero-tail swing units have a slewing mechanism that allows the upper structure to rotate within its own footprint, eliminating the risk of tail swing and making them ideal for working in confined spaces. Offset kinds have an offset boom design, enabling digging close to walls and other obstacles without compromising stability.

In terms of intended use, there are wheeled excavators for handling various materials such as scrap metal, logs and construction debris. These machines are equipped with specialized attachments like grapples and magnets. Excavators for demolition, meanwhile, feature reinforced structures and powerful hydraulics for breaking concrete and handling heavy debris. For forestry applications, excavators equipped with specialized attachments like felling heads and grapple saws are efficient for tree felling, delimbing and log handling.

Advantages of wheeled excavators

High road speeds: Wheeled excavators are capable of up to 56kph, significantly reducing transport time and cost compared to tracked counterparts. This suits projects with multiple job sites or requiring quick response times.

Maneuverability on paved surfaces: These machines provide agility, making them perfect for urban environments or tight workspaces.

Reduced ground pressure: Compared to tracked excavators, wheeled types exert less pressure on the ground, minimizing damage to sensitive surfaces like asphalt or concrete. They are suitable for working on delicate infrastructure or environmentally sensitive areas.

While wheeled excavators offer several advantages, such as increased mobility and faster travel speeds, they also come with drawbacks when compared to tracked types.

Wheeled versions have a smaller footprint and are therefore less stable, especially when working on uneven or soft terrain. This can limit their lifting capacity and make them more prone to tipping over. These excavators have less traction, especially in wet or muddy conditions, and have a lower ground clearance. Both factors can make maneuvering and operating on slopes, uneven ground or areas with obstacles difficult.

While some wheeled excavators offer lifting capacities comparable to tracked kinds, others have lower ranges due to their smaller size and lower stability. This can affect their usefulness for certain applications.

Wheeled excavators typically consume less fuel than tracked kinds due to their lighter weight and more efficient travel mode. They have a lower price as well. However, their tires and axles require more frequent maintenance and replacement, and this can lead to higher operating costs in the long run.

Overall, wheeled excavators are a good option for applications where mobility and speed are important.

Hybrid and fully electric wheeled excavators

Hybrid wheeled excavators are becoming increasingly available from major manufacturers such as Caterpillar, Komatsu and Volvo. They typically use a combination of a diesel engine and an electric motor to power the machine. The electric motor assists the diesel engine during acceleration and heavy lifting, reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

Hybrids can achieve fuel savings of up to 25 percent compared to diesel models. They produce significantly lower emissions of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, and are quieter, making them suitable for use in urban areas or noise-sensitive environments. However, these excavators have a higher purchase price, plus the battery pack may require replacement after a few years.

Fully electric wheeled excavators, meanwhile, are still relatively rare, but several manufacturers are developing and testing prototypes. They are powered by a battery pack and an electric motor and do not produce any emissions during operation. In addition, electric excavators have lower operating costs than diesel units, as they do not require fuel or oil changes. However, these excavators have a shorter operating range, and the battery pack may take several hours to recharge.

Electric trend in heavy equipment

The electrification trend is likely to continue in the heavy equipment industry. Here are some reasons:

Environmental: The construction industry is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. Electrifying heavy equipment can significantly reduce these levels and help mitigate climate change and improve air quality.

Regulations: Governments around the world are targeting a lower carbon footprint, and this is driving the development and adoption of electric and hybrid heavy equipment.

Economic: Electric heavy equipment has a high upfront cost, but this can be offset by government incentives and subsidies and lower fuel consumption and maintenance expenses.

Technological: Battery technology is improving, leading to higher energy density, longer life spans and faster charging times, while charging infrastructure is expected to be more widespread. Both developments will make electric heavy equipment more practical and cost-effective.

Industry trends: Major heavy equipment manufacturers are investing in the development of electric and hybrid models, a clear indication that electrification is the future of the industry.

Here are some specific examples of how electrification is impacting other types of heavy equipment:

Trucks: They are becoming increasingly popular for short-haul and urban delivery applications. Tesla is among the major manufacturers developing electric trucks, while Volvo and Daimler already have their own portfolios.

Cranes: They are used for a variety of applications, including construction, wind turbine installation and port operations. Liebherr and Konecranes are among the manufacturers offering such models.

Bulldozers: Electric dozers are still in the early stages of development, but several manufacturers are working on prototypes. These machines are expected to offer significant environmental and economic benefits over traditional diesel units.

Electrification is a growing trend, and it is likely that electric and hybrid heavy equipment will become increasingly common in the coming years.
