The global gaming headsets market, valued at $2.8 billion in 2022, is expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.8 percent to reach $4.1 billion in 2027, according to a report published this month by Research and Markets. About 51 percent of the market’s growth, at least until 2024, will come from the Asia-Pacific region, according to market research firm Technavio.
Key growth drivers of the sector are the widespread availability of internet services, the rise of subscription and cloud gaming, the emergence of independent game developers, and the development of e-sports. Income opportunities for gamers through playing tournaments or streaming games on social media channels also contribute to the market’s growth.
Another growth indicator for the sector is the size of the gaming population. In 2020, about 2.69 billion people –two out of every five people in the world – were gamers, playing on consoles, PCs, and mobile devices. China is the largest gaming market, with 655 million gamers as of 2020. The US is second, with 244 million gamers (three out of four Americans). Japan, the Republic of Korea, and Germany join these two countries in the top five market. The number of gamers worldwide is forecast to reach 3.22 billion in 2023.
Manufacturers of wired and wireless gaming headsets in China produce a variety of models ranging from budget units to the best PC gaming headsets, multiplatform models, and those for professional e-sports use. In terms of FOB prices, models on offer range from sub-$10, sub-$50, sub-$180, and about $200 per unit for those with virtual reality functions.
The best gaming headsets provide a balance of sound quality, build quality, connectivity, and battery life.
Typical features of wired and wireless gaming headsets available for sourcing are: 40mm or 50mm neodymium drivers; detachable or retractable noise-cancelling microphones; connectivity options of 3.5mm plug-in jack or USB for wired models, or NFC and Bluetooth for wireless units; and battery life between 20 and 40 hours. Surround sound (7.1-channel) functionality and RGB lighting, which improve the playing ambience, are also current trends. For build quality, materials used for the headband range from all-plastic, to combined plastic and metal, to all-metal arcs and memory foam; those used for earcups are memory foam with either faux or real leather.
