Light switches are being transformed nowadays into more intelligent hubs that connect to apps and control the smart home. Many too don’t look like the traditional outlets anymore, having touch buttons or screens. Traditional switches, though, can still gain attention thanks to aesthetic upgrades. One product that shows this is the newly crowdfunded wooden light switch plate by US-based CowTech.

The new switch plate or cover is handmade, adopting oak laminate with a walnut finish. Wiping and sanding are also done by hand. The designs, coming in nature, lace, flag or custom themes, are precision laser engraved. The plate can be easily screwed into existing single or double light switches and can blend nicely with home furniture or wooden walls and floors.

If not turning stylish, other new light switches and plates stick to being simple yet multifunctional. There are now switch covers that look plain but double as automatic night lights. In China, makers are releasing sleek minimalistic versions that are “smart” or “connected”. Another design looks seamless but can act as its own power source.
