Shaper Tools has released a handheld CNC router that adopts augmented reality to allow users to see what they are cutting through the bit and comes with an automatic stabilization feature.

A CNC machine that adopts augment reality and an auto-correcting interface is getting rave reviews from builders and power tools enthusiasts.

Launched by US-based startup Shaper Tools, the device called Origin is the world's first-ever handheld CNC router that utilizes computer vision to allow users to see what they are cutting from the bit and incorporates automatic stabilization to compensate shaky hand movement.

The latter feature is possible via the ShaperTape, which according the company, is a "uniquely patterned tape that allows Origin to very precisely know its position." The tape can be placed in any area within the workpiece, and can be peeled off and used again.

The router’s spindle is connected to a built-in three-axis control system, enabling the device to correct automatically any errant movements. This can only be done with the ShaperTape. If the spindle strays beyond the Origin's ability to adapt, the machine will raise the bit and will continue from where it left off only once it gets back in the right position.

Origin supports SVG, Inkscape, Illustrator, Sketchup, Solidworks and AutoCAD formats. Designs can be transferred to the machine wirelessly or via a USB flash drive. Users can also download their patterns from the tool's ShaperHub and create drawings in the unit itself.

The device handles a range of materials, including wood, soft metal, plastic and composites. Its ¼in collet suits most ¼in router bits. The unit can also be connected to a vacuum cleaner for collecting dusts after working.

Origin is available in a preorder price of $1,499 to $1,699 and will retail at $2,099 beginning next year.
