The simple wristband links with smartphones for automatic unlocking, receiving alerts and other basic functions.

In a world with recently-introduced smart watches like LG’s US$230 G watch and Samsung's Galaxy Gear line (starting at US$149.99) taking headlines, Xiaomi’s new wearable looks like the company missed a zero in its price tag.

It hasn’t.

Even more similar competing devices like the Fitbit Flex (US$30) and Jawbone Up (US$70) can be several times more expensive, though they do include more functionality and data integration with smartphones and the cloud.

Xiaomi's fitness-focused band will not have the screen resolution of LG’s or Samsung's smart watches. In fact, it has no screen at all. The Mi Band is a water-resistant fitness tracker with just a few functions: pedometer, gesture-based phone unlocking, sleep tracking and vibrating alarm. That appears to be it. The wristband serves as a simple proxy for interacting with a smartphone using Bluetooth. However, unlike more sophisticated wrist wearables that might struggle to make it through a day of use, the Mi Band boasts a 30-day battery life.
