Gallery View: COB LED module suppliers focus on fine-pitch LED display market

COB LED modules are set to become the mainstream choice for small-pitch LED displays, such as Mini-LED and MicroLED types, which are considered next-generation screen technologies. These outperform their SMD counterparts in terms of pitch and reliability while also presenting a cost advantage.

In China, traditional and flip-chip COB LED modules come in 3 to 300W-rated square, round and rectangular types that emit a single or two colors. These have more than 100 lm/W luminous efficacy, 2,900 to 6,500K color temperature and over 70 or 80 CRI, and are widely used in LED lights, displays and backlighting. Products comply with RoHS requirements, with some tested to the LM-80 standard.

Flip-chip variants ensure a finer pitch, higher color rendering and lower thermal resistance, in addition to being lighter and having better dust, water and impact protection. These attributes make them suitable for LED screens with pitches below 0.5mm.

Key materials and components, such as LED chips, substrates, gold wires and adhesives, come mostly from domestic companies unless buyers request for imported ones.

Input costs did not fluctuate much in 2020 and product prices remained stable. However, due to intense competition, some makers offered lower quotes. The same cost and price trends are expected throughout 2021.

5,000 to 6,000-lumen luminous flux

Model DSCOB-100W COB LED module from Dongguan Lanjin has a 5,000 to 6,000-lumen luminous flux, an 840 to 3,380nm wavelength and a 140-degree viewing angle. The full-spectrum unit has a rated voltage, current and power of 32 to 34V, 3,500mA and 100W. Life span is 50,000 hours.
