Power banks likely do not have large profit margins, even for well-known brands such as Anker, so the company is starting a rental model.

Anker, a company known for its chargers and AC adapters, believes the future of power banks is rentals. The company plans on using its AnkerBox to rent out power banks for $1.99 per day. It will also allow people with the AnkerBox app installed on their phones to get 30 minutes of free charging. If the power bank is lost or misplaced, it is only a flat $30 to cover the cost, and the user gets to keep it if it is found.

In terms of technology, there is nothing all that impressive about the power banks included in the AnkerBox. Each of these has a capacity of 6,700mAh. Most modern smartphones should be able to get between one and two full charges. If a user decides to pay the $2 to take the power bank for the day, it can be dropped off at any AnkerBox location. For now, the pilot program is just running in Seattle, but the company is looking to expand to Los Angeles and New York, among other cities, according to TechCrunch.

Renting out power banks is unlikely to take off in developing markets. People in many countries already travel with power banks or have a friend who is carrying one. Power banks are also a complimentary service in some restaurants in China, further undermining the viability of a rental model.

In the US, users usually find an outlet somewhere to charge up and power banks have become more popular in recent years. These portable chargers have become so affordable, though, that Anker’s model might not get off the ground. This is thanks largely to China manufacturers and brands. Xiaomi, for example, sells a 16,000mAh power bank for less than $20.
