Takara Tomy is dreaming of electric kittens instead of sheeps, but its Hello Woonyan is certainly reminiscent of a Philip K. Dick novel. The new robot cat is for those who want a pet minus the requirements of a living one.
Hello Woonyan purrs while a person is petting it and chases after moving objects using wheels at the end of its legs to roll around the house. The robot also alters the color of its eyes to indicate a change in mood. Other abilities include singing and dancing for entertainment. It is unlikely the robot cat can detect the light from laser pointers, though. Sometimes, there is just no substitute for a real, living pet.
CNET likened the robot to a Tamagotchi, a 1996 keychain-sized video game in which a user takes care of a pet. The publication noted that Japan has long appreciated "electronic companions," an interest that does not stop with pets.
Woonyan is not Takara Tomy's first robotic pet. It has also made a dog called Zoomer and a dinosaur named Dino. The Japan company has a few humanoid robots as well.
Robot companions of all forms are becoming popular as artificial intelligence makes them more useful in the home. Some China suppliers are already making household interactive and service robots. However, the industry is still nascent and much of the interaction with personal assistants happens on smartphones or new audio hubs such as Amazon's Echo devices.
Hello Woonyan will be unveiled officially in Japan on April 28. It will cost about $170.
