A new smart home irrigation system that not only fully automates watering but also reduces water consumption is up on Kickstarter.

The product, Exilong, by Jerusalem-based Tevatronic, comes with AA-battery powered wireless soil sensors running up to three years, takes into account root dimensions and measures each plant’s water intake. It will then adjust irrigation and schedules automatically, controlling up to four 24V valves, depending on the data gathered and monitor the plant. Operation can be checked on a smartphone app though the makers are confident that leaving the system on its own will be fine.

In an agricultural experiment, it was found that the system reduced by up to 75 percent water and fertilizer usage with a 20 percent output.

Garden and lawn watering systems that are app-manageable are increasing in supply, and those that can run on their own with minimal or no constant monitoring from the user and have water-saving features can stand out.
