With the rapid development of smart manufacturing and Industry 4.0 in China in recent years, the CNC machined parts industry there has developed at a similarly fast pace. The country remains the world’s largest production base for this product category, with more than 3,000 companies – located mostly in the Pearl River and the Yangtze River Delta regions and the Bohai Bay Rim Economic Region.
Dongguan, in Guangdong, is a major hub in this sector, with between 300 and 400 manufacturers of CNC machined parts in the towns of Tangxia, Shijie, Hengli, Changping and Chang’an.
Most of these companies are small and midsize operations, with fewer than 100 that can realize an annual production value of $14.28 million or more. Dongguan World Precision and Dongguan Hongxin Precision are among these industry leaders.
Many Dongguan manufacturers have customers overseas, and such shipments account for 20 to 60 percent of output for most, while some allocate their production entirely for export markets. The main destinations include Europe, North and South America, Asia and the Middle East.
The worldwide machined parts industry reached $223 billion in 2022 from $210 billion in 2021, registering a 6.19 percent increase year on year, according to China IRN. This is expected to rise further to $235 billion in 2023 and $248 billion by 2025.
In China, the CNC machined parts market will continue to increase annually by 10 percent, driven by rising demand from the automotive, industrial, medical, new energy and military fields. In 2022, it rose to $148 billion from $94.64 billion in 2017, according to Chinabgao.
Dongguan-based suppliers have been taking advantage of this upward trend by expanding production.
Fully engaged in turning out CNC machined parts, Dongguan Taihe Hardware Products Co. Ltd boosted its output by 15 percent in 2022 and realized a total turnover of $12.5 million. This followed an investment of $850,000 in additional factory space and new production equipment. The company said that it would implement a 10 percent increase in the next 12 months, expecting the demand trend to continue.
In terms of exports, shipments have been on the rise, with an annual uptick of 5 to 10 percent expected to be sustained.
Many CNC parts manufacturers based in Dongguan hope to catch up with their foreign counterparts operating in China. Precision currently ranges from ±0.005 to ±0.01mm for most. For Dongguan Zero Precision, ±0.002mm is achievable thanks to advanced CNC machines from Japan.
Dongguan Guzhan Precision Hardware Co. Ltd, meanwhile, has installed over 50 CNC machines, mostly Brother-brand units from Japan. It is ready to acquire more production and test equipment in the coming year.
Chinese companies emphasize their ability to handle metal and plastic materials, including aluminum, copper, steel, stainless steel, ABS, POM or Delrin and nylon.
There are also breakthroughs upstream that can help Chinese parts companies enhance their competitiveness. One is from Wuhan Huazhong, which introduced high-end CNC systems comparable to Siemens’ 840D but with a better price-performance ratio. These homegrown systems were installed in over a thousand high-end CNC machines that were made in China in 2022.
