Suppliers of flexible PCBs target applications in mobile and automotive electronics, communication and medical equipment, and wearable devices.

China's flexible PCB industry continues to develop types with higher density to meet the requirements in mobile and automotive electronics, communication and medical equipment, and wearable devices. Companies such as Zhuhai Super-Winner can realize up to nine layers and 1.6mil minimum line width and spacing.

Manufacturers hope a similar follow-through in production, having shifted emphasis to double-sided and 4 to 6-layer units although they still offer single-sided kinds. Across these types, the common minimum specifications are 3mil for line width and spacing, and 0.1mm for holes. Surface finishes adopted include ENIG and immersion gold.

To cut costs, some companies boost production efficiency by using polymer thick-film technology, which is based mainly on PET and eliminates the etching process. Flexible PCBs made using this alternative method are quoted one-tenth only of those employing mainstream material polyimide. Regardless of the type of input adopted, most makers ensure output meets CE, RoHS and UL standards.

All materials, including rolled and electrolytic copper, are sourced from local providers. Suppliers turn to foreign suppliers on buyers' request.

Outlay for manufacturing inputs did not increase significantly in the past year, keeping product prices unchanged. Some companies, however, lowered their quotes to counter intense competition. This trend is expected to continue throughout 2019.
