Plunging smartphone prices drive India's tech device space as other markets reach saturation point.

According to new estimates from GfK, India is to become the fastest-growing tech device market in 2015, growing to US$34.8 billion. While this includes all kinds of electronic devices, the market is expected to be driven by smartphones, and India is predicted to beat every other world market in terms of the value of smartphones sold in 2015.

In part, this is because most markets, even China to a degree, have been saturated in 2014. To another degree, it is a direct result of the plunging price point of smartphones. While India’s per-capita GDP is far below developed markets and other developing markets like China, smartphones have become far more accessible, with phones reaching as low as US$100 this year and perhaps even lower next year. While China is expected to be the second-largest growth market in terms of value in 2015, this is expected to be driving in part by the switch to 4G, with new smartphone users being a secondary factor.

This also means that there will be a switch from feature phones – which currently dominate the market – to smartphones in India. Accessory makers and buyers should consider that when planning sourcing for the next year and beyond.
