IHS predicts that wearables will be even more packed with fitness- and health-related sensors.

Research firm IHS predicts that the market for sensors used in wearables will double in 2015 from the 67 million sensors sold in 2013. The firm further estimates that by 2019, shipments for sensors will increase to about 466 million units.

According to the firm, it does not expect as much growth for wearable products, but it foresees that wearables will become even more packed with sensors through 2019. IHS estimates that wearables will have 4.1 discrete sensors in 2019, a nearly three-fold increase from wearables in 2013, which averaged 1.4 sensors per wearable.

Driving the trend will be the increased use of wearables as well as the need for fitness- and health-related sensors like pulse monitoring, humidity sensors, and UV detectors. Since simple fitness trackers typically have only one or two sensors, the growth in complex smart watches and the changing needs of fitness bands will significantly increase the number of sensors per device.
