MediaTek rolled out its first 64-bit-enabled 8-core 4G solution earlier than expected featuring specs that are said to be competitive with Qualcomm's current-generation chipsets.

MediaTek surprised the market recently by announcing its first 64-bit-enabled 8-core 4G solution - the MT6795 - targeting the high-end 4G smartphone segment. The chipset has been in the works for a while, but industry observers expected a launch by the end of 2014 - not as early as July.

The 4G LTE-capable chipset is targeted at higher-end Android smartphone and tablet manufacturers, and represents a challenge to Qualcomm’s dominance in the sector. The chipset can also be expected to be featured in Android powered set-top boxes.
