In the nascent wearable electronics industry, there are a number of applications that have yet to be explored. Adult-focused fitness bands and sophisticated smart watches dominate the market, but LG and Wahoo have developed wearables for children. Or rather, wearables to help parents keep track of kids and keep them safe.

LG has announced a wristband called the KiZON, a device meant to be worn by kids to allow parents to keep track of their children using a smartphone app. The wristband includes a button that, when pressed, calls a pre-determined number (like a parent’s cell phone).

Parents can also "ping" the wristband, and if the child does not respond within 10 seconds, the device puts a call through to the parent that will allow them to hear what is going on in the background. The device has a 36-hour battery life, and is expected to be released in Europe and North America later this year.

Not a fashion statement, however. (Source: iSwimband)

iSwimband, on the other hand, is designed specifically to help parents monitor their children when they are at the beach or near a pool. Drowning is a real risk for small children (it is the number two cause of accidental death for children in the US), and the band is designed to send an audible and visual alarm to the parent's smartphone or tablet when it has been immersed for a dangerously long time. The water-resistant device retails for US$99 and can be linked to an iOS app.
