Luxury brand Chanel has teamed up with France-based cosmetic science startup to launch an innovative beauty product adopting microfluidics. The technology makes it possible to control the size and shape, and manipulate fluid content of every single droplet, altering the structure of an emulsion and allowing the droplets to be encased effectively in an evanescent membrane.
Because of this, active beauty ingredients can be preserved up to the moment of application, meaning the droplets in the beauty products do not burst until they are directly applied on the skin. When the droplets erupt, they offer a different sensory experience and more efficient moisturization.
Microfluidics is adopted in Chanel's new Hydra Beauty Micro Creme, which the droplets are able to resist bursting when being scooped out of the jar and release the active ingredients only when the cream is applied to the face.
Chanel's vice president of beauty research and innovation Christian Mahé expressed optimism on the potential of the technology. "This microfluidics innovation platform is capable of broadening the scope of possibilities, new technologies, new visuals, new textures, to develop tomorrow's cosmetics," he said in a statement.
