Reconnecting with the earth. This is how Austria-based crystal maker Swarovski described collectively the four major trends that are set to shape ornamental crystals and gemstones in coming months in its recently concluded Spring/Summer 2017 Crystal Design Inspirations event in Los Angeles entitled "The Balance of Nature".

Main trends point to the key elements of nature: air, earth wind and fire.

For air-inspired pieces, weightlessness and transparency are the central themes. Examples are silver and other light metals. The concept of suspension or crystals suspended in seemingly gravity-defying structures will also be highlighted. A blend of large and small elements to create balance and circular shapes that resemble halos will likewise be prevalent.

Ethnic and tribal silhouettes reflect earth. Smoky quartz, jet and graphite are set to dominate color palettes while the use of organic materials will gain popularity. Fossilized surfaces and details, and unfinished natural textures will be emphasized as well.

Vibrant shades of blue and fuschia, and coral silhouettes take cue from aquatic elements. Pearls, mostly in baroque structures, are once again foreseen to flourish. Delicate pavé embellishments and elaborate marine shapes are also among the anticipated highlights.

Fire will be evident in bold red gemstones. Oxidized surfaces that emphasize the beauty of dark, aged materials will be widely on display. Fringes and tassels are among the choice trims. A combination of contrasting elements such as yellow gold and gunmetal are likewise expected to bring out the scintillating quality of the element.
