Switching or switched-mode power supplies (SMPS) offer advantages of better efficiency in smaller form factors compared to their linear counterparts. For these features, they are preferred in consumer electronics, telecom, industrial equipment and high-power applications.
With miniaturization still a trend, manufacturers are working on raising the performance levels of products further while continuing to shrink their sizes. In China, some suppliers have achieved 0.3W maximum no-load power consumption and exceeded 87 percent efficiency, meeting the standards of EU CoC V5 and US DoE VI/CEC VI.
Typical switching power supplies from Chinese companies are isolated and nonisolated types in wall-mount and desktop designs. These have 100 to 240VAC, 50/60Hz input, 3.8 to 48VDC output voltage and over 80 percent efficiency, with an operating temperature of 0 to 40 C. There are water-resistant versions having an up to IP55 rating.
These SMPS have built-in safety features against overload, -current, -temperature conditions and short circuits. They use MOSFETs and ICs sourced usually from STMicroelectronics, Onsemi, TI, NXP, Linear and Toshiba. Other manufacturers turn to homegrown providers such as HiSilicon, ZTE Microelectronics, Spreadtrum and the Tsinghua Unigroup. The rest of the components used are domestically made EMI filters, transformers and other passive components, PCBs and shells.
Most China-made SMPS comply with industry standards such as UL, CE, CCC, CB, FCC, IEC and RoHS.
