Wireless charging technologies are in every device or fixture, even in things many haven’t thought it can be integrated with before, including lighting products such as desk lamps. Now, ceiling lights are your next wireless chargers. An Israel-based startup, Wi-Charge, has introduced this year a wireless-charging ceiling lamp called Light.
Wi-Charge’s Light can power different gadgets, ranging from mobile and audio devices to wireless cameras and locks, transmitting 2.5W within 5m. It is also able to detect which gadget or product needs energy.
The maker emphasizes that the solution is free of radiation and interference, and has a wider working range as compared to the usual RF technology-based products. The Light ceiling fixture is said to have FDA approval and is seen to be ideal for commercial establishments such as restaurants.
As for adoption, it may take some time as users or companies need their devices to integrate the compatible receiver to work with Light, meaning partnerships with the maker have to be carried out. If not integrated into the devices themselves, Wi-Charge’s idea is that the receivers will be put in related accessories such as phone cases or dongles.
The technology seems very promising, though, as the need for power on-the-go rises with the increase of wireless mobile and smart home innovations. Just like ceiling lights that have been popular as Wi-Fi hubs, versions like Wi-Charge Light that double as charging hubs may be the next big thing in lighting tech as well.
