The new Lytro Immerge camera is the first to capture a 360-degree image using a dense light field array in one shot. Other 360-degree cameras combine several images together to create a single photo. These cameras are becoming more popular as expectations for the burgeoning virtual reality market increases. Lytro is targeting its new technology at a professional crowd, but it will only be publicly available by Q1 2016. In the meantime, companies can apply for prototype access on Lytro's website.

This is Lytro's first product aimed specifically at the professional market and it is not expected to come cheap. Bloomberg reports that the full setup, which includes a necessary server and software, could run between $250,000 and $500,000. The equipment could be rented out for $6,000 to $8,000 per day, though. The server, with its large storage capacity, is required to store all the data captured by the Lytro Immerge, which means it is connected to the camera all the time and is therefore always in the camera's sightline. This makes the equipment a useful tool for filmmakers, but not so much for the average consumer.

VR is expected to play a large role in the future of movies, video games and other visual media. Consumers would probably not want to put on a headset every time they sit down to watch TV, but the immersive experience of a 360-degree video can still be transformative. Lytro has already been in talks with VR startups Vrse and WeVR, and the Hollywood studios of Disney and Warner Bros. Lytro seems confident that its new technology is the future of 360-degree image capturing, or is at least trying to make it so.
