How long does it take to create the lightest shoe ever?
For Japan-based sports goods giant Asics, it took 3 years and more than 300 prototypes. Enter the DynaFlyte, the first-ever pair of running shoes to break the 300g barrier. A men's size 9 version, in fact, weighs only 270g while a women's size 7 tips the scale at 221g.
The secret is in the company's FlyteFoam midsole. The proprietary material contains organic fibers that limit the amount of deformation, providing comfortable cushioning and greater stability for the feet. FlyteFoam weighs 55 percent less than EVA, which is used in conventional midsoles.
In addition, DynaFlyte features strategically placed forefoot flex grooves for increased flexibility.
The running shoes debuted in stores last July 1 and are priced at $140.
Apart from footwear innovations, Asics is known for its support for environment-friendly production. Last month, the company has announced its sustainability strategy for 2020 after meeting its goal of reducing significantly carbon dioxide emissions and water consumption in its tier 1 supply chain.
