According to a survey conducted by Del Webb, a subsidiary of Atlanta-based homebuilding company PulteGroup, the number of single female baby boomers who are purchasing a new home is increasing.

There are approximately 25 million single female baby boomers across the US. This demographic is said to be financially stable and able to make long-term financial commitments, hence a rising source of demand for the new homebuyer market.

The research found that 28 percent of 1,020 Del Webb single female buyers aged 50 to 68 expect change in their housing needs in the next five years. More than half or 60 percent plan to shift to smaller housing accommodations. Nevertheless, they want to continue investing in luxurious features such as granite countertops and modern appliances.

For those who are intending to move, about half prefer their new home to be a single family home, followed by a condominium unit or an apartment at 19 percent. Nine percent want a townhouse.
