Laser diodes, which produce coherent light, are widely used in optical communication systems, 3D printing, laser medical equipment, laser measures, laser indicators and barcode scanning. They are small and light, and have a low power dissipation and a long operating life span. Globally, these optoelectronic devices were valued at $6.2 billion in 2021 and are projected to reach $18.3 billion by 2031 or at 11.6 percent CAGR from 2022, according to Transparency Research Market.

In China, laser diodes that can be sourced are 635, 650, 670, 690, 780, 810, 860, 960, 970, 980 and 990nm-wavelength variants with vertical divergence angle of 15 to 40 degrees and horizontal divergence angle of 6 to 10 degrees. Power range is usually 2mW to 1W, depending on requirements. Other specifications can be made as most Chinese manufacturers accept OEM and ODM orders. Most products are CE-approved, UL-listed and RoHS-compliant.

Chinese manufacturers interviewed by Global Sources said that 3D printers and medical equipment will be hot applications in the coming years.

Chips, glass covers and metal cases are the key components and materials used in the production of laser diodes. They are obtained from domestic or foreign providers, depending on buyers’ requirement. Cree, Osram, Epistar and Changelight are the usual sources of high-end and midrange chips, and San’an, Yuanjie Semiconductor and Mind Semi for entry- and midlevel versions.

The cost of these manufacturing inputs, especially chips, rose slightly in the past 12 months, but may stabilize in 2023.

Laser diode in various sizes

Guangdong Xusheng Semiconductor Co. Ltd’s 3535 VCSEL-9526 laser diode comes in sizes of 2835, 3535, 3532 and 3838. It has a wavelength of 650 to 1,080nm or 1,550nm and forward voltage of 1.6V. An order of at least 1,000 units has a lead time of 15 days.

3W laser diode

Model SE02-HP60BS-3-9009 from Guangdong Xusheng Semiconductor Co. Ltd is a laser diode with 3W rated power. Applications include CCD and infrared lights, and searchlights. The minimum order quantity is 3,000 units. Lead time is five days.

Laser diode, 532nm wavelength

Shenzhen Hedwin Technology Co. Ltd offers the HDW-LM5322012-9840, a laser diode with a glass lens. This device has 532nm wavelength, 0.1 to 40mW power, 2.7 to 12VDC operating voltage and more than 5,000-hour life span. It suits industry, survey and aim lights. A minimum order of 500 units is required. Lead time is seven days.

Laser diode, 50mW optical output power

From Shenzhen Hedwin Technology Co. Ltd, this laser diode has 50mW optical output power. Model 650nm-5mW comes in wavelengths of 970, 980 and 990nm. Its operating voltage and current are 1.5 or 2.1V and 75,100mA, and operating temperature is 10 to 40 C. This CE-approved device has a minimum order requirement of 1,000 units. Lead time is five days.

Laser diode, 650nm wavelength

The C-VY-M003 laser diode from VY Optoelectronics Co. Ltd has an output power of 5mW and rated voltage of 2.2V. This optoelectronic component, with 650nm wavelength, has low light attenuation and high stability. A minimum order of 10 units can be shipped within seven days.

2 to 4.5mW laser diode

VY Optoelectronics Co. Ltd’s laser diode, the VY-T0090, has 650nm wavelength, 2 to 4.5mW output power, 3 to 4.5V operating voltage and ≤40mA operating current. Dimensions are 9x21mm or as specified. The supplier requires an order of at least 10 units and ships within seven days.
